Excerpt:
"We‘re tired. We‘re stressed. We‘re
over-extended. But we can‘t stop. We‘re committed.
We have to get it done—whatever it takes. Our desperation
to combat the signs of fatigue and stress generated an elaborate
over-the-counter drug industry equipped with caffeine, cigarettes,
aspirin, antacids, sleeping pills, laxatives and even herbal
tranquilizers. Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Marlboro, Bayer and
Rolaids net their fortunes keeping us going and going and
going…until we drop.
"When these self-help props prove ineffective because
our tolerance has increased, prescription drugs are ordered.
Americans today take an estimated 5 billion tranquilizers,
3 billion amphetamines and 16 thousand tons of aspirin in
a year to combat stress and fatigue. Not surprisingly, the
number of stress-related diseases have also increased over
the past decades. Even relatively new conditions, such as
chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and Epstein-Barr have become
commonplace. Other symptoms of exhaustion may manifest in
a variety of physical ailments and diseases including migraines,
backaches, ulcers, colitis, insomnia, hypertension, libido
loss, and finally a heart attack or stroke...
"From the beginning of creation, we‘re given
the example of God-at-rest. Why? Was he tired from forming
everything out of nothing? Did he need a break from divine
demands? Did he take a day off from being God and let the
earth chill-out after creation? I don‘t think so....
In fact, God rested after creation, because his work was
complete. It was a done deal!... Biblical rest doesn‘t
mean comfort and ease, nor idleness or irresponsibility.
It doesn‘t necessarily require the cessation of activity,
but bestows serenity and security even in the midst of strenuous
activity. God‘s rest doesn‘t require the luxury
of a settled life but rather the comfort of a secured soul."

Mary
Andrews-Dalbey holds a doctorate in Professional
Psychology and a master's degree in Nursing. She has published
articles in Christian Parenting Today, Dissertation Abstracts,
Supervisor Nurse, and Behavior Research & Therapy. After
an earlier career in pediatric nursing, she founded Hosanna
Christian Counseling Center in Santa Monica, CA. Since then,
she has ministered as a Christian psychotherapist, facilitated
Christian Twelve Step Recovery groups, implemented church
wellness education programs as a Parish Nurse, and developed
a specialty in women's issues. She's currently the Program
Director of Villa Majella Maternity Home and Pregnancy Outreach
Support Services.
As a Christian, psychologist, registered nurse, and minister's
wife, she's acutely aware of the clinical and spiritual
consequences that clients, patients, and parishioners endure
under ongoing stress and compulsive striving. Her psychological
and medical backgrounds, along with her ministry leadership
experience, uniquely qualify her to write from this wholistic
(spiritual, psychological, and physical) perspective. Moreover,
she's passionate about this topic, because she has experienced
restoration from her own spiritual and emotional burnout
through resting in the Lord.

What the Reviewers are saying about The
REST of Your Life...
"The Rest of Your
Life by Mary Andrews-Dalbey is a powerful ray of light
piercing the dark forces of materialism, consumerism and
driven-ness that threaten the spiritual, physical and emotional
lives of so many in our world today. It touches the core
issues that have blocked our ability to entertain God's
presence and experience the joy of His gracious, competent
and effective work at the center of our lives. It is a powerful
reminder of the intimate, loving and powerful attributes
of a Heavenly Father who calls us to leave the rat race
and enter his rest.
"In many ways counter
cultural and revolutionary, it calls into question commonly
held notions of how our western lives relate to time, money,
success, and service. It’s an articulate, Biblical
and personal call to consider the fact that God invites
us to enter an entirely different rhythm of life, not simply
to baptize our manic, fearful, insecure and performance
driven Western lives in more "christian" language.
Revealing very deeply held fears and patterns with compassion,
sensitivity, humor and story, it implicates us in our cultural
captivity and shows us how deeply into our own souls these
bondages have attached themselves.
"This book cuts to the
core of our overworked and undernourished Western spirits
and minds and brings to light the hope, liberation, and
peace that God promises to all who will enter his rest.
An outstanding, much needed resource for individual churches
and small groups."

"As I read this book,
I received an impartation of the Spirit to trust the Father
to provide rest for my heart. I believe the author’s
teaching on rest is birthed in prayer and her own experience
of healing and finding rest. The book gives what the title
promises—rest for the burned out
ones the Father loves. I love the author's encouragement
to memorize Scripture; the insightful reflection questions
that help us share the journey with others in a small group,
and so many practical suggestions for experiencing rest.
For one who has experienced burnout, this book answers the
cry of my heart for rest. I will be using it to provide
pastoral care and minister healing."
