Excerpt:
Grief following miscarriage
is usually intense and traumatic. It‘s a sudden shock
to the system: physically, spiritually and emotionally.
A once joyful day, filled with bright and hopeful anticipation
and excitement, is suddenly ripped apart by words like ‘there‘s
no longer a heartbeat,’ when you see blood, or feel
those horrible cramping pains. Immediately, a woman kicks
into ‘mama bear mode’ and knows, deep in her
gut, that something is horribly wrong. And still, some people
don‘t call her a mother. It‘s clear that she‘s
a mother, just by her instincts.
"Ironically, this sudden tragedy often gets overlooked
by society. Grieving couples are told to ‘move on,’
forget or are simply ignored altogether. Grief is hard enough
to handle alone. Lack of understanding and information haunt
today‘s population. Social isolation and silence only
make it worse.
“There is still something about real, live people
looking into your face, seeing your tears and saying ‘you‘re
not alone.’ That‘s exactly why we‘re here.
That‘s exactly why this was created. It‘s time
to break the silence of grief and share with those who have
“walked a mile in your shoes.“ The others in
this group have felt the same burning pain of loss, the
same social isolation and seek the same validation that
you do. You are not alone.” |

What the Reviewers are saying about Breaking
the Silence...
"Breaking the Silence invites
you to remember, love--and even hope--after the pain of
losing a little one. Sylvia's honesty and compassion are
tender and healing to the wounded parent's heart. This is
a much needed work on an often unspoken topic—I highly
recommend it."

"Breaking the Silence speaks directly to the
heart of a bereaved parent from the heart of a parent who
has walked a mile in their shoes and given words to their
pain. When we lost our triplets, I felt completely alone.
I spent hours online and at the library trying to find a
way to do this grieving thing right. I
read book after book that told me how I might feel or tried
to validate my loss in broad terms, but what I really needed
was to hear how someone else did it—to know that I
was not alone or crazy for feeling mad, hurt, abandoned
or confused. We didn't think we knew anyone who had lost
a baby. until word got out and suddenly we were flooded
with families we had known for years that had been carrying
the same empty arms. Breaking the Silence is a
great resource for bereaved parents and is refreshing look
at the pain of infant loss through a Christian perspective.
Kudos to you, Sylvia, for being able to relive your hurt
and put it on paper. This study is an asset to any counselor,
pastor, support group leader or bereaved parent.

“No one knows the pain of losing
a child like someone who has been there. In sharing the
intimate details of the death of her twin girls, Sylvia
McDonald demonstrates this fact with undeniable clarity.
I have no doubt that the pain she has experienced will be
surpassed only by the healing experienced by others through
the sharing of her story. Breaking the Silence
is a much needed tool that will help countless people grieving
the loss of a baby.”
